Siobhán has always been interested in how her work is viewed – creating a special artist edition in an edition of 100 only is another example of this process – creating a niche number where her photography can be viewed not just within the pages of a book but also as a print – an object , that can be removed and framed and hung within another home. 50 of these books remain in Manilla for the Asian Market and the other 50 are in the UK making it both easier to distribute but also making sure the book on an – as yet – little known aspect of Philippine architecture, history and culture is sold worldwide.

Houses that Sugar Built, An Intimate Portrait of Philippine Ancestral Homes
By Siobhán Doran and Gina Consing McAdam
This is the book project from where derived the stunning “Sala Mayor” series of images by architectural and interiors photographer and photographic artist Siobhan Doran. Awarded 1st place in the Architectural & Design category of the Sony World Photography Awards 2024, the series, shot in natural light, depicts the main living/drawing rooms of the grand houses built by Filipino sugar planters during the late 1800s to 1930s. Five years in the making, and with over 250 original photographs, Houses that Sugar Built: An Intimate Portrait of Philippine Ancestral Homes explores the as yet little known architectural legacy to be found in Iloilo, Negros Occidental and Pampanga — the main sugar-producing provinces of the Philippines. This is the first time these extraordinary mansions have been featured in one elegant volume, layered with intimate stories and individual house texts by Gina Consing McAdam that transport us back to when these houses were in their heyday.
As part of the Sony World Photography Awards travelling exhibition, “Sala Mayor” from Houses that Sugar Built has been viewed at Somerset House in London, the Museo Diocesano Carla Maria Martini in Milan, and at the Busan International Photo Festival in Busan, Korea and is currently exhibiting at Willy-Brandt Haus in Berlin.
