Serpentine Pavillion 2014
Chilean architect Smiljan Radić was commissioned to design the 14th annual pavilion, which opened in June 2014 outside the entrance to the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens.
Occupying a footprint of some 3502 on the gallery lawn, the temporary pavilion comprised a semi-translucent, cylindrical structure intended to resemble a shell resting on rough-hewn boulders. It took its inspiration from the architect’s earlier work – particularly, a model of ‘The Castle of the Selfish Giant’ (inspired by the Oscar Wilde short story) and the Restaurant Mestizo, part of which is supported by large rocks.
The 2014 pavilion was designed as a ‘flexible, multi-purpose social space with a café sited inside.’
